St. Edmund's is a small school where children are nurtured and encouraged to be the best that they can be. The beauty of a small school is that all children have a chance to shine, whether that be as a member of the school council, a house captain, a main role in one of our productions or reading at a mass. Some children in a large school are often overlooked and are not given the same opportunities. This means that children in our school grow in self-worth, determination and confidence. Some parents may feel that being a member of a small school can be a negative thing when approaching entry into a large high school. I would suggest this is not the case because they have been developed into sensible young people who are ready to learn and a pleasure to be around.
St. Edmund's has excellent relationships with our local high schools and offers an excellent transition program. The children take part in a multitude of activities throughout their school life which involve the high schools. One program involves dance leaders from Our Lady Queen of Peace coming to the school on a weekly basis over a period of ten weeks, teaching our dance club a dance. The children and their parents are then invited to the school to perform on a stage with other schools from the area. This has been a very successful venture and the children have enjoyed taking part twice a year.
From Year Five, our children have access to summer school which takes place during the summer holidays. All children are invited to both of the high schools in preparation for their transition into high school. Once the children and their parents have made the decision which school their child will go to the following events take place:
- Meeting between high school staff and St. Edmund's staff to discuss the children, their celebrations, and their needs.
- Summer School
- Transition sessions. Children who may find transition difficult have extra sessions arranged for them.
We have found over the years that the above activities have helped all of our children to settle into high school and have a positive high school experience. If you are concerned about this element of choosing a small school, please do not hesitate to discuss the matter with the headteacher, who will help you to put your mind at rest.
